ABC Paulista , Large ABC Region ( Portuguese Região do Grande ABC ) or ABCD is a Brazilian industrial region in the outskirts of the city of São Paulo .

The ABC Paulista is not a separate local authority, but is part of the São Paulo metropolitan area ( Região Metropolitana de São Paulo ) and consists of the following seven municipalities of the metropolitan area: Santo André (A), São Bernardo do Campo (B), São Caetano do Sul (C), Diadema (D), Mauá , Ribeirão Pires and Rio Grande da Serra . The ABC Paulista is historically known as the center of the Brazilian automotive industry . Various international companies can be found here, e. B. Daimler , Ford , Volkswagen and General Motors .

Due to the strong presence of the metal industry in the ABC Paulista, the region became the cradle of the trade union movement in Brazil. In the 1980s, the former President of the Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva , was a senior union official in the region.

The planning coordination for economic development, traffic, supply, environment and education is taken over by a Consórcio Intermunicipal Grande ABC established under civil law in December 1990 . The main working groups are Núcleo Infraestrutura Regional for regional infrastructure, Núcleo Desenvolvimento Urbano e Gestão Ambiental for urban development and the environment, Núcleo Desenvolvimento Econômico Regional for regional economic development and the Núcleo Inclusão Social e Direitos Humanos for social inclusion and human rights. The first ten-year plan was drawn up in 2000, and a second in 2010 for the period 2011 to 2020.

In 2005, the Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC), a federal university, was founded with its headquarters in Santo André .
