CD Barrio México is a football club from Goicoechea , Province of San José , Costa Rica , which currently plays in the Primera División Aficionada , the third Costa Rican division.

history

1948-2010

On May 9, 1948, the Nicolás Marín club was founded in San José. In 1949 they took part in the third division for the first time. A year later, in 1950, the club was promoted to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División . There Nicolás Marín won in 1952, 1961, 1962 and 1963, 1952 and 1962, but the club lost the game for participation in the top division and in 1961 there was no promotion. 1963 Nicolás Marín then managed in the playoff against the last placed in the first division, CS Herediano and rose to the Primera División de Costa Rica .

In 1965 Nicolás Marín rose again from the second division, called himself AD Barrio México and in 1966 succeeded in immediate promotion to the first division. There, Barrio México changed its name to Deportivo México in 1969. Deportivo México played in the first division until 1979, in the year of relegation under the name Municipal San José. During this period of excellence, they managed to become runner-up in 1976.

From 1981 to 1984 Barrio México was also first class, again under the name AD Barrio México. In 1982, 8 Barrio Méxicos players died in a bus accident on their way back from training.

In the 2000s, Barrio México was converted into a public company and has been called CD Barrio México since then.

In 2010, CD Barrio México exchanged its second division franchise for that of first division club Águilas Guanacastecas CF (see below). Barrio Méixico returned to the Primera División de Costa Rica after 26 years in the second division .

Case "Águilas Guanacastecas CF - CD Barrio México"

In advance of the season, Mario Sotela , majority owner of the highly indebted Águilas Guanacastecas CF , wanted to sell the franchise to the second division club CD Barrio México and start in the second division in the 2010/11 season. However, this exchange, only one week before the start of the season, was forbidden by FEDEFUTBOL , since the two responsible league associations ( UNAFUT , LIACSE ) had already drawn up the exact participation and competition regulations as well as the game schedule and franchise sales are only possible before the various regulations have been approved .

So Sotela and Minor Vargas , majority owners of CD Barrio México, decided to keep the two franchises in the respective league, but to register the board, the players, the stadium, etc. of the other club and thus swap the franchise.

CD Barrio México, which now plays in the Primera División, immediately changed the name of the franchise to CD Barrio México, but the Liga de Ascenso forbade Águilas Guanacastecas CF to rename their new franchise. Thus the Águilas wear jerseys in their club colors, but with the name CD Barrio México.

Thus there is a club called CD Barrio México in both the first and second division, with the real Barrio México now playing in the first and the Águilas with the name Barrio México in the second division. Despite everything, the press continues to call the Águilas Águilas.

In November 2010, before the last day of the group, former Liberia players Mia CF Minor Díaz and Pablo Salazar brought the franchise currently used by CD Barrio México to the labor court, as they were each owed $ 200,000. The labor court then determined that the franchise was blocked for gaming operations until CD Barrio México, user of Liberia's franchise, had paid all debts. CD Barrio lost the last game of the group stage against AD Municipal de Pérez Zeledón 3-0 at the green table, as did the subsequent quarter-finals against AD Santos de Guápiles .

In December 2010 the General Assembly of UNAFUT decided to rate the Barrio México games with 0: 3 during the new season, unless all debts of the franchise are paid on the Friday before the game in question.

After majority owner Minor Vargas was charged with washing $ 670 million in the US and tax evasion in Costa Rica and Vargas himself became insolvent, Mario Sotela took control of the first division franchise, which is currently still in use by Barrio México. He planned that at the beginning of the new season the franchise would again belong to the Águilas, who would then play again at home in Liberia under the name Liberia Mía CF.

Exclusion from UNAFUT

After several meetings, discussions and investigations into the case, the members of UNAFUT voted at an extraordinary general assembly on March 1, 2011 to exclude the Liberia Mía franchise, used by CD Barrio México, with immediate effect due to the events during the last six months. The remaining games of the club are rated 0: 3 and the rest of the game operations are maintained. The last placed will be relegated to the second class despite the exclusion of Barrio México; however, the excluded franchise is completely excluded from professional football (1st and 2nd league).

2011-2018

Since the 2011/12 season, Barrio México has been playing again with its own original franchise in the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División. The club no longer has anything to do with Minor Vargas and his business partners, but is now led by former conductors of the club, including the new president Rolando Zelaya.

Exclusion from 2nd league and amateur football (since 2018)

Due to accumulated debts with the Costa Rican Social Security (CCSS) in the three-digit million range, Barrio Mexico was excluded from the 2nd division during the 2017-2018 season. Not a single game was played during the season. Since 2018-19 the club has been in the Primera División Aficionada, the highest amateur league.

Stadion

Barrio México plays its 2010/11 home games at the Estadio José Joaquín "Coyella" Fonseca with a capacity of 4,500 .
