The working group ethics (working group ethics of the German society for dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine , DGZMK) deals with the development of basic ethical rules in dentistry . The rules of medical ethics apply as the basis .

Target groups

The principles are aimed at dentists , Fachzahnärzte and oral surgeons with their respective teams, patients, professional organizations ( dental associations , dentists' associations , dental societies, dental interest groups), dental technicians and dental industry.

Supplement to medical ethics

The ethical challenges that dentists are confronted with in their daily professional practice are in some respects very specific and were not covered by medical ethics until 2010. This led to the establishment of the Ethics Working Group to close the gap in medical ethics. Some examples with ethical implications are the areas of “Cosmetic Dentistry” or “Wish-Fulfilling Dentistry”, the highly complex dental age assessment for refugees, the specific normative implications of geriatric dentistry and the particular relevance of dental visualization strategies.

The dentist's license to practice medicine , which is still valid in 2020, dates back to 1955 and therefore still does not provide for any training in ethical issues. As a result, there is (almost) no teaching and no teaching staff in this subject. In the dental model professional code (MBO-Z), ethical issues did not play an explicit role until 2010. The version of the model professional code adopted in May 2010 was accompanied for the first time by the Geneva pledge - in the sense of a silent voluntary commitment by the profession. There it says in § 2: "In particular, the dentist is obliged to exercise his profession conscientiously and in accordance with the requirements of medical ethics and humanity." Further ethical principles have been incorporated into the dental model professional code. In the law for the improvement of the rights of patients in 2013 numerous protective provisions were enacted in the paragraphs § 630c , § 630d and § 630e BGB, which are supposed to protect the autonomy of the patient.

Focus of work

The main areas of work of the working group ethics include:

  • the preparation of opinions on ethical issues in all areas of dentistry
  • the gradual implementation of clinical ethics in dental studies and the inclusion of the subject in the future version of the dental licensing regulations,
  • the integration of clinical ethics into continuing education and training in dentistry
  • promoting public relations work in the field of clinical ethics, d. H. the sensitization of dentists and representatives of the professional professions in dentistry for clinical-ethical questions and problems.
