The locomotives of the ALCO RSD-1 series were diesel locomotives with the Co'Co 'wheel arrangement. They were built from 1942 to 1946 and were the six-axle version of the ALCO RS-1 .
history
The four-axle predecessor of this series was named ALCO RS-1 and was built by the ALCO locomotive factory. It was shipped to many states. Its high axle load alone made it impossible to use it freely. Therefore, its six-axle variant was created in 1942. Compared to the four-axle version, the diesel engine power was not increased, so that the machine was a little underpowered.
The technology of the locomotive corresponded to the robust American construction of the time; a low-speed six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine of the type ALCO 539T with diesel-electric power transmission . For a detailed description of the technology, see SŽD series ТЭ1 . A total of 150 locomotives were produced.
SŽD series Д a
The majority of these machines, 68 locomotives, were delivered to what was then the Soviet Union . There they received the series designation Д a . The manufacturer made 70 locomotives, two of which were lost on the sea route to the Soviet Union. The locomotives came to the Soviet Union via the ports of Murmansk and Severodvinsk . The locomotive Д a 20-27 hauled together with the steam locomotive Э М 1387 the special train from Josef Stalin to the Potsdam conference . This strongly influenced the decision to derive the construction of the SŽD series ТЭ1 .
The locomotives were standardized with many assemblies of the SŽD series ТЭ1 in the following period . They were in service in the Soviet Union for about 40 years and were retired in the 1980s.
RSD at other railway administrations
According to the Internet, 42 locomotives were used in Iran , of which 36 machines went to Alaska in 1950 . Approximately 20 vehicles were delivered for operation in the United States . 29 locomotives came to Europe in 1945 . They returned to the United States in 1946.
