The AS.37 Martel was originally an anti- radar air-to-surface missile that was developed as a joint project between the French company Matra and the English company Hawker-Siddeley . She is no longer on duty today.

The name Martel is a combination of letters from the English words M issile A nti- R adar TEL evision.

AS.37 / AJ.168 / Armat

The AS.37 was available in different versions:

  • The AS.37 Martel used by France and England was an anti-radar missile. It was equipped with a passive radar seeker head . In England, the AS.37 was decommissioned in March 1994 together with the Blackburn B-103 Buccaneer .
  • The AJ.168 Martel, only used by England, was equipped with a TV seeker head and was used as an anti-ship missile . The AJ.168 was replaced and retired in 1988 by the Sea Eagle .
  • The AS.37 ARMAT, whose development began in 1980, is the improved version of the AS.37 Martel. It was equipped with a better seeker head and a more powerful solid rocket motor.

All variants used a two-stage solid rocket motor . A total of approx. 1640 pieces were produced.
