Hawker Aircraft Limited was a British aircraft manufacturer . Their warplanes, such as the Hawker Hurricane and the Hawker Typhoon from the time of the Second World War , achieved particular fame .

history

Hawker Aircraft Ltd. was founded in 1920 by Harry Hawker , Thomas Sopwith and Fred Sigist as "HG Hawker Engineering Co. Ltd". The predecessor was the bankrupt Sopwith Aviation Company . There were manufacturing facilities in Kingston , Langley , Dunsfold and Blackpool . In 1933 the name was changed to "Hawker Aircraft Ltd", and Gloster Aircraft Company was taken over a year later .

Hawker Hurricane

In 1935 the company was merged with the engine and vehicle manufacturer Armstrong Siddeley and his daughter Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft and renamed Hawker Siddeley Aircraft Ltd. renamed. In the same year the aircraft manufacturer AV Roe and Company became part of the group. In 1960 De Havilland and Blackburn Aircraft were added.

Hawker Aircraft initially continued to produce its own designs under its own name. It was not until 1963 that the old names within the Hawker-Siddeley group were dropped. The Hawker P.1127 was the last model to be branded "Hawker".

In 1977 Hawker Siddeley's history ended with the merger with BAC and Scottish Aviation to form British Aerospace . The last type of aircraft to be developed in Kingston was the Hawker Siddeley Hawk . This type was further developed by British Aerospace and later by McDonnell Douglas (USA).

The US company Raytheon took over the business aircraft division of British Aerospace in 1993 . Raytheon Aircraft (since 2007 Hawker Beechcraft ) has been producing business jets under the old name Hawker since then .

In the interwar period, Hawker manufactured various military aircraft for the Royal Air Force , including the Hawker Hind and the Hawker Hart . Other models were added during World War II , including the Hawker Hurricane .
