Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft was founded in 1912 as the aircraft construction division of the armaments company Sir WG Armstrong Whitworth & Co., Ltd. in Newcastle-upon-Tyne .

In 1920 Armstrong Whitworth acquired the aircraft engine and automobile manufacturer Siddeley-Deasy . The engine and vehicle construction divisions of both companies were then combined under the umbrella of Armstrong Siddeley , while the aviation division became Sir WG Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft Company .

In 1927 Vickers and Armstrong Whitworth were united . Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft and Armstrong Siddeley were not incorporated into the new group, but sold to John Davenport Siddeley . Since then, Vickers aircraft has been built under the name "Vickers-Armstrongs".

In 1935 Siddeley sold Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft to competitor Hawker , creating the new Hawker Siddeley Aircraft group . Despite the merger, the parts of the company remained largely independent.

Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft merged with Gloster Aircraft Company in 1961 to form "Whitworth Gloster Aircraft Ltd". In 1963 Hawker Siddeley gave up the old brand names. Armstrong Whitworth's last draft, the Argosy , was then renamed "Hawker Siddeley Argosy".
