AUKUS (based on the English abbreviations of the three participating states " A ustralia, U nited K ingdom, U nited S tates") is a trilateral military alliance between Australia , the United Kingdom and the United States . The alliance was concluded in mid-September 2021 between Australia ( Morrison II government ), the US ( Biden government ) and Great Britain ( Johnson II cabinet ).

The USA and Great Britain are to support Australia until March 2023 as part of the alliance, in particular with the development and use of nuclear submarines . In addition, knowledge about artificial intelligence , quantum technology and cyber topics , among other things , should be exchanged through the collaboration .

According to the unanimous assessment of observers, the agreement was directed primarily against the growing influence of China in the Indo-Pacific region , although China was not directly mentioned in the official communiqués. The Chinese side reacted indignantly. A spokesman for China's foreign ministry said the deal would undermine regional peace and stability and intensify the arms race.

The French government was also upset, because with the conclusion of the agreement, Australia had shelved long-cherished plans to buy French conventional submarines ( diesel-electric propulsion ) .
