A Hat in Time is a Jump 'n' Run computer game, that of Gears for Breakfast develops and Humble Bundle for macOS , Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was released. The game was built on the basis of Unreal Engine 3 and funded by a Kickstarter campaign that doubled its donation goals within the first two days. It's based on previous 3D platformer games for Nintendo 64 and GameCube such as Super Mario 64 , Banjo-Kazooie, and Super Mario Sunshine . The game was released for Microsoft Windows and macOS in October 2017 and two months later for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. A Wii-U version was planned, but it never came out. A version for the Nintendo Switch was released in October 2019.

The plot of A Hat in Time follows Hat Kid, a young girl trying to return with a spaceship to their home. While the Hat Kid is on her journey, she approaches a planet, and a member of the planet's Mafia comes to collect a toll for the Mafia City government. The Mafia man swings open the spaceship door, causing Hat Kid and all of their “Time Pieces”, magical hourglasses that power their ship, to fall onto the planet below. Hat Kid ends up in Mafia Town and meets Mustache Girl, a local troublemaker who hates "bad boys". Mustache Girl agrees to look for the missing time pieces in exchange for Hat Kids to help fight the Mafia, and the two of them defeat the Mafia boss. When Mustache Girl realizes that the Time Pieces can rewind time, she wants to use them to become a time-traveling superhero, but the Hat Kid refuses to tamper with time due to the dangers involved. Annoyed, Mustache Girl declares herself to be her enemy and sets off to find the time pieces on her own.

Going around the world in search of time pieces, Hat Kid encounters many opponents, including two birds vying for a film award, an evil spirit that steals the soul of Hat Kid, and a group of mountain people killed by a dangerous one Disease become infected. While Hat Kid is exploring the world, Mustache Girl breaks into her ship and steals her time pieces to turn the planet into a fiery inferno where her word is law. Kid confronts her, but Mustache Girl uses the time pieces to open a gap and make herself almighty. The enemies that Hat Kid has fought come to her aid in battle and ultimately decide to self-destruct so that Hat Kid can use the pons they drop to heal himself. Has Kid finally defeated Mustache Girl and uses the Time Pieces to bring the planet back to normal and revive everyone who was killed. Although their former enemies are sad to see them go, the Hat Kid restores the time pieces to their vault and continues their journey home.

Gameplay

The gameplay style has been compared by several critics to games like Super Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie . The players travel between four open levels that can be explored freely without any time limit. Players collect various items, solve puzzles, and use an umbrella to fight enemies. The primary objective is to collect magical hourglasses, 40 of which can be found in the game. These unlock additional levels as more are collected. After they are defeated, the enemies drop “pons,” a currency that can be used to unlock additional challenges and purchase badges that will increase Hat Kid's skills. Players can collect balls of wool at each level that can be embroidered into new hats. Each hat grants Hat Kid a different skill, such as a faster sprint or brewing explosive potions. Other collectibles include Relics that can be used to unlock bonus levels (Time Rifts) and Rift Tokens that can be exchanged on a machine for bonus materials such as music remixes and additional cosmetics. With the newly acquired skills, areas that have already been completed can also be revisited to find additional bonus items.

The first idea for A Hat in Tim e was started by developer Jonas Kaerlev, who started the project in response to his feeling of a persistent lack of 3D platformers specially developed by Nintendo. In an interview with Polygon, Kaerlev revealed that he and Gears for Breakfast initially didn't expect the Kickstarter success that A Hat in Time eventually received. Kaerlev concluded that due to the impact Donkey Kong 64 had on the genre, which he found overwhelming, the gamer with too much collecting was expecting low demand for the game. Development for the game began in August 2012 and was scheduled for a release in the second quarter of 2013, but has been significantly delayed. At the beginning of development, Kaerlev was the only developer on the game, but over time, development grew into Gears for Breakfast, a team that spanned four countries and worked entirely on a volunteer basis. Through the Kickstarter campaign, the game exceeded its original target of $ 30,000 for a total of $ 296,360. In July 2013, it was announced that the game would be released on Steam Greenlight . Several guest composers contributed titles to the game, including Grant Kirkhope .

Reviews

A Hat in Time received mostly good feedback from critics. The PC version of the game on Metacritic achieved an aggregate rating of 79 out of 100.

Chris Carter of the English language video game website Destructoid gave the game an 8.5 out of 10, calling it "an impressive effort with a few palpable problems holding it back." Dominic Tarason from PC Gamer rated the game with 86 out of 100 points with the words: "Apart from a few scratches, A Hat in Time is a creative, playful and polished homage to a genre that doesn't find nearly enough love on the PC."

Sales

A Hat in Time sold 50,000 copies just two weeks after its publication . The game has now been sold more than half a million times worldwide.
