The eel cod ( Muraenolepis ) are the only genus within the family of the same name and belong to the order of cod-like fish (Gadiformes). There are eight described species that live in the Southern Ocean on the continental shelf , especially the Antarctic .

features

Eel cod are between 22 and 40 centimeters long. In the body shape they resemble the eels and the fin arrangement as a fin edge , which consists of the second dorsal fin, the caudal fin and the anal fin, is similar. The pelvic fins are, however, throaty and filamentous and in front of the dorsal fin there is one or two fin rays, the reduced remnants of the first dorsal fin. They also have barbels on their chin. Their gill openings are narrow and only reach the base of the pectoral fin. The head of the ploughshare is toothless, pyloric tubes are missing. The number of Branchiostegal rays is 10 to 13, the number of eddies 67 to 69.

Fins formula : dorsal I – II / 127–141, anal 98–112, pectoral 37–38.

The eel cod are probably an original family of the order Gadiformes.
