The foundation probably goes back to the invasion of the Alemanni into the Roman Empire in the 3rd century.

The village was mentioned for the first time in 1136 as Alon in a property register of the Ellwangen Monastery , together with a local nobleman Konrad von Aalen . The lords of Aalen, who are attested until 1426, may have had their castle at the Aalen castle stables , which is about 1.3 kilometers from the Johanneskirche.

In the village there was also a provost of Ellwangen Abbey.

Between 1241 and 1246 the city of Aalen was founded east of the village and east of the Kocher. The village and city of Aalen existed side by side for more than 100 years, until the village was probably destroyed in the city war in 1388. The village church, which was probably built in the 9th century and is dedicated to John the Baptist , still exists today and is one of the oldest churches in Württemberg.
