Abate Fetel (originally Abbé Fétel ) is an old pear variety . It is a chance seedling that was discovered in 1866 by the namesake Abbé Fétel near the municipality of Chessy-les-Mines in the Rhône department in France and described for the first time in 1886. Abate Fetel is one of the main commercial cultivars u. a. widespread in Italy , Chile and Argentina and is therefore often offered in stores.

Variety characteristics

Abbé Fétel grows as a weak to medium-strong tree and is usually grown as a bush tree , it delivers good yields early on .

The long and club-shaped fruit reaches or exceeds 12 cm in length and 7 cm in diameter, making it one of the large to very large varieties. The rough skin has a yellow-green base color when it is unripe, and a yellow base color when ripe, which is mostly rusted brown to a large extent, which also covers the numerous lenticels .

The fine pulp is white, has a firm, coarse-celled structure and a sweet, low-acid taste with a fine aroma.

The Abbé Fétel is used as a table pear and is ready to be picked in the northern hemisphere from September and ready to eat in October, November , but can also be stored until January.
