Abbé Carré

Barthélemy Carré de Chambon or Abbé Carré for short (born approx. 1636) was a French traveler to India and a Catholic priest of the Grand Siècle who traveled for France and the East India Company . He died after the end of the 17th century. He is best known as the author of a travelogue entitled Voyage des Indes Orientales (Paris 1699). His travelogue about the trip in India and the Middle East was translated into English (The Travels of Abbé Carre in India and the Near East 1672 to 1674) and was included in the travel book series of the Hakluyt Society (2 / 95-97). Carré traveled from France through Syria , Iraq , the Persian Gulf to Surat , Goa , Bijapur , Madras , St. Thomé . From there he reports on the capture of Trincomalee and St. Thomé by Jacob de la Haye and of the siege of St. Thomé by the Golconda army and the hostilities with the Dutch , and he reports on what he experienced on his return to France Sicilian revolt against Spanish rule in Messina etc.

A more recent French edition was published under the title Le courrier du roi en Orient: relations de deux voyages en Perse et en Inde 1668-1674.
