Abba Saul ben Batnit
Abba Saul ben Batnit (= son of the Batana woman) was a Jewish scholar of the 1st century AD and belonged to the so-called 2nd generation of the Tannaites .
He is said to have been the son of a proselytess from Batanaea (Roman name for Basan = Bashan ). He was a wine merchant and business partner of Eleazar ben Zadok . In various places his honesty is particularly emphasized.
He handed down a (completely preserved) mocking song about the arbitrary and frequent change in the office of high priest and the associated irregularities.
