Abbesses is an underground station of the Paris Métro in the 18th arrondissement of Paris under the Butte Montmartre . The name of the station translates as "Abbesses" and comes from the "Place des Abbesses" (Eng. Place of the Abbesses). He refers to the Benedictine nuns - Abbey in Montmartre in the 12th century by King Louis VI. was founded and served as the first abbess of Ludwig's wife Adelheid of Savoy .

The station is served by Métrolinie 12 . It lies around 36 meters below the surface of the earth, which makes it the lowest station in the Métronetz.

The station went into operation on October 31, 1912 when the northern extension of Line A from Pigalle to Jules Joffrin station was opened. On March 27, 1931, line A was renamed line 12. In 2006 and 2007 the station was completely renovated.

In Abbesses you can change trains to the Funiculaire de Montmartre and the Montmartrobus .

In 2011 the number of passengers was 2,545,127.

architecture

The underground station is equipped with two side platforms in a vault . Two spiral staircases and two elevators lead from an intermediate level south of the platforms to the access level ( Salle des billets ) below the Place des Abbesses , on the eastern edge of which is the only entrance.

The covered staircase was designed in the Art Nouveau style based on plans by Hector Guimard and is a popular photo motif. Originally for receipt Metro Station de Ville Hôtel in the Rue de Lobau built, the roof was moved in 1974 from its former location on the Montmartre. Today it is one of the two existing canopies of this type; the other is located at the station Porte Dauphine of Line 2 .

The nearby "Mur des je t'aime" is worth seeing. On a bench in the small complex you can relax from climbing the stairs if you haven't used the elevator.
