Abbots Langley

Abbots Langley is a village in the English county of Hertfordshire and is located near St Albans between Watford and Hemel Hempstead on the M25 . For a long time the place belonged to Watford and was part of the rural district of this city. Since 1974 the community belongs to the Three Rivers (District) .

history

The Norman Paul de Caen founded this village. It is first mentioned under the name Langelai in the Domesday Book .

Worth seeing

The Methodist Church was built in 1154 and renovated in 1974.

Personalities

Nicholas Breakspear was born in Abbots Langley in 1100. As Hadrian IV he was elected in 1154 as the only English pope so far. The archaeologist John Evans (1823-1908) was buried here. The English soccer star Manuel Almunia lives here in a property that is said to be haunted. The garden designer Tom Stuart-Smith lives in Serge Hill in a converted barn with extensive gardens.

In the south of the village, the Leavesden Film Studios have settled on a former airfield. Scenes from James Bond films, Sleepy Hollow and Harry Potter were filmed here.
