William George Aston, 1911

William George Aston (born April 9, 1841 in Derry , † November 22, 1911 in Beer in the southern English county of Devon) was a British consular officer in Japan and Korea .

After working in the consular service in Japan and Korea, he was British Consul General in Korea from 1884 to 1886.

Japanology

Aston was also one of the top three British Japanologists working in Japan in the 19th century. The other two were Ernest Mason Satow and Basil Hall Chamberlain .

He was the first translator of Nihongi into the English language . He has given several lectures to the Asiatic Society of Japan .

In 1912, Cambridge University Library acquired 10,000 rare Japanese volumes from the Aston and Ernest Satow collections, which formed the starting point for today's vast collections.
