Abbotsholme is a private boarding and day school near Rocester , Staffordshire , but is itself in Derbyshire .
Creation and concept
The school is on the south-western border of Derbyshire near the River Dove . It was founded in October 1889 by Cecil Reddie (1858–1932) together with Muirhead and Cassels on an old English aristocratic seat and was a model of the newer rural education home movement ; it soon became a synonym for " progressive education ". In 1896/97 Hermann Lietz taught at this school for a year and received suggestions for his own homes. He wrote a novel Emlohstobba ( Palindrome ), in which he processed his experiences from Abbotsholme.
Reddie envisioned a school that would educate the whole human being - mental, physical, as well as character. He founded Abbotsholme deliberately in contrast to the official school. The ancient languages played a rather subordinate role in Abbotsholme, the modern languages , history and the natural sciences were more important. Everyday school life was divided into classroom work (mornings) and free activities (afternoons). In addition to sports, excursions and artistic activities, the freer activities also included working in the field, in the garden or in the workshop.
The school has around 295 students today.
