Abd al-Rahman Sharkawi

Abd ar-Rahman Sharkawi ( Arabic عبد الرحمن الشرقاوي, DMG ʿAbd-al-Raḥmān al-Šarqāwī ; born November 10, 1921 in ad-Dalaton, al-Minufiyya Governorate ; died November 24, 1987 ) was an Egyptian writer .

Life

Sharkawi was born into a peasant family. He published his first works as a law student at Cairo University , which he attended from 1938 to 1943. He also took part in the fight against the monarchy . In 1951 he founded the magazine Al-Katib , which advocated peaceful coexistence between peoples. From 1951 to 1955 he led Egyptian delegations at various peace conferences .

Sharkawi became widely known after the publication of his novel Al-ard ("The Earth", 1954), which is about oppressed peasants who rebel against their landowners; the book has been translated into several languages. In the novel Mohammed, Bote der Freiheit (1962), there are concepts of left-wing Arab socialism . In this work the author tries to relate the life of the Prophet Muhammad to the present time and the social struggle. The history of Islam and its projection into the present are the basic themes of Sharkawi's play Kalif Husein (1969). In Fellache (1967), which is dominated by the themes of revolution and democracy , the author returns to rural life after the land reform came into force .

Sharkawi was a member of the World Peace Council .
