Abd ar-Rahman V. ibn Hisham al-Mustazhir bi-llah ( Arabic عبد الرحمن بن هشام المستظهر بالله, DMG ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān b. Hišām al-Mustaẓhir bi-llāh ; * 1001 ; † January 17, 1024 in Córdoba ) was Caliph of Córdoba from 1023 to 1024 .

Life

Abd ar-Rahman V came from the Umayyad dynasty and was a great-grandson of the Caliph Abd ar-Rahman III. as well as a brother of Muhammad II al-Mahdi . During the usurpation of the throne of the caliphate by the Hammudids (1016-23), Abd ar-Rahman V lived very secluded in the company of friends interested in literature; he also wrote (partially preserved) poems himself. After the successful uprising of the people of Cordoba against the Berbers and the expulsion of the Hammudid al-Qasim al-Mamun , the city's leaders decided to bring the Umayyads back to power. Among the members of this sex residing in Cordoba at that time was Abd ar-Rahman V, who was around 22 years old at the time and was recognized as the new caliph on December 2, 1023. After his accession to the throne, he took on the honorable surname Al-Mustazhir bi-llah (ie "the one asking for God's help"). However, two other applicants were passed over in the election, who now violently opposed his rule.

The caliph sought his advisors from the nobility of the capital. The eminent polymath Ibn Hazm also took over government posts under him . When Abd ar-Rahman V surrounded himself with a guard of Berbers, there was an uprising against him. As a result, he was besieged and captured by an angry mob of residents of Cordoba in his palace. His fall occurred on January 17, 1024, after having ruled for only 47 days. His relative Muhammad III. was installed as the new caliph by the insurgents. He had Abd al-Rahman V executed immediately. All of the Berbers in Cordoba were also killed. Under Abd ar-Rahman V, the Abbadids in Seville had made themselves independent of the caliphate and founded an independent dynasty.
