Abdoulie Janneh ( Abdoulie Morikebba Janneh ; born August 4, 1944 in Bakau ) was Executive Director of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) of the United Nations from 2005 to 2012 .

Life

Janneh studied engineering at the University of Sierra Leone , took a postgraduate degree in project planning from Bradford University in England and received a master's degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Nottingham .

He began his professional career in 1979 at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as a development planner in his home country Gambia. From June 2000 to October 2005 Janneh was Deputy Secretary General and Regional Head of UNDP for Africa. He headed several United Nations development programs in 45 countries in Africa.

In September 2005 he was appointed Managing Director of the ECA by the then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and thus succeeded Kingsley Amoako . He retired in August 2012.

Under his leadership, the UNDP department for Africa is strongly committed to crisis prevention, poverty reduction and the fight against HIV and AIDS. Because of his development goals, he also advocated the partnership between the ECA and the governments.
