Abdu al-Hamuli

Abdu al-Hamuli ( Arabic عبده الحامولي, DMG ʿAbduh al-Ḥāmūlī ; * 1854 in Tanta ; † May 12, 1901 in Cairo ) was a traditional Arab singer and musician from Egypt.

Abdu al-Hamuli went to Cairo after studying classical Arabic music and various Arabic instruments and founded an orchestra there. He then especially occupied himself with the oud and Turkish art music . He had a great influence on the development of Arabic music, especially on its forms of singing. This was particularly evident in the treatment of the maqamat and the free improvisation between the individual sections of a song.
