Abel Hovelacque

Abel Hovelacque.

Alexandre Abel Hovelacque (born November 14, 1843 in Paris , † February 22, 1896 there ) was a French linguist and anthropologist.

Hovelacque was a member and president of the Anthropological Society and in 1891 founder of the Revue de l'École d'anthropologie . He had previously published a handbook of anthropology in 1887.

He was also a member of the French Chamber of Deputies from October 6, 1889 to October 23, 1894 . In 1886 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .

Three and a half years after his death, the city of Paris honored him on August 2, 1899 by naming a street in the 13th arrondissement .
