Abel Paz (born August 12, 1921 in Almería , † April 13, 2009 in Barcelona ), actually Diego Camacho Escámez , was a Spanish syndicalist , anarchist revolutionary, resistance fighter and writer.

Life

At the age of 15 he fought in the Spanish Civil War on the side of the CNT and FAI against the Franco regime and for the social revolution. From 1934 he worked as an apprentice in a textile factory . In 1935 he joined the anarcho-syndicalist union Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT-AIT). After three years of civil war and the suppression of the “short summer of anarchy”, he had to flee to France in 1939 from the troops of General Franco .

There he was interned with other anti-fascist Spain fighters in various camps, Argelès-sur-Mer , Barcarès and Saint-Cyprien . After the Wehrmacht marched into France, he returned to Spain in 1942 and fought underground against the Franco regime. He was arrested in December 1942 and imprisoned until 1953.

He emigrated again to France, where he worked in a printing company until 1977 and participated, among other things, in the Paris May 1968 .

Abel Paz lived in Barcelona until his death on April 13, 2009. The author, who also wrote the standard work: “ Durruti . Life and Death of the Spanish Anarchist ”, was one of the last living witnesses of the Spanish Revolution. Again and again he took part in international information events on the Spanish civil war.
