Abell 31 , according to another cataloging Sh2-290, is a planetary nebula in the constellation Cancer .
Abell 31 is what appears to be one of the largest planetary nebulae. Due to its angular expansion, it now has a low surface brightness of 26.9 Mag / arc-sec². The southern part of the nebula is still surrounded by an arcuate shock zone, while the boundaries of the northern part are very blurred. The latter and the great extent point to the old age of the planetary nebula, as it is already beginning to mix and dissolve with the interstellar matter .
