The city belonged to the Samnite Wars in the 3rd century BC. BC to the Roman domain and became under Sulla Colonia Veneria Abellinatium , which belonged to the tribe Galeria . It was expanded under Augustus (with the addition of the name of his wife Livia , who was wealthy in the Hirpinerland: Colonia Veneria Livia Abellinatium ) and Severus Alexander ( Colonia Veneria Livia Alexandriana Abellinatium ). After an earthquake (346), a volcanic eruption (472) and the incursions of the Goths and Lombards in the 6th century, the city was abandoned. The inhabitants settled on the heights of the area where today's Avellino was built.

Two wall belts from the 3rd century BC have been preserved. With towers and a moat from Augustan times, thermal baths and houses. Outside the city walls there are also remains of an amphitheater and an aqueduct leading to Misenum . In the east there is a necropolis ( San Ippolisto ) that was used up until the Christian era . Finds can be found in the Museo Irpino in Avellino.
