The Aberystwith and Welsh Coast Railway was a British railway company based in Wales . The spelling Aberystwith instead of Aberystwyth was contemporary.

The company founded on July 22, 1861 built a railway line along the Welsh coast from Aberystwyth via Tywyn , Barmouth , Porthmadog to Pwllheli . In Machynlleth a connection to the Newtown and Machynlleth Railway was created. On July 27, 1862, the company received the concession to build the railway line from Barmouth to Dolgellau . On July 3, 1865, the section from Barmouth to Penmaenpool was opened, but there was not enough money for further construction. The remaining part of the route was therefore only built in 1870 by the Bala and Dolgelly Railway . However, the operation was carried out by the Cambrian Railways.

The original plan to build a bridge over the Dyfi estuary had to be abandoned because there was no stable subsurface. The first section between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth could not be opened until June 23, 1864. On the entire route to Pwllheli, operations began on October 10, 1867.

On August 5, 1866, the Cambrian Railways took over the Aberystwith and Welsh Coast Railway.
