A counter is usually a small, fixed facility where services are traded on a personal basis. The most well-known forms are ticket counters, bank counters, counters for selling tickets or for accepting freight or mail.

General

A counter is a small location where a service provider usually sells securities for its services (e.g. tickets or postage stamps ) and sometimes prepares the provision of a service (e.g. acceptance of freight). Typically, the person providing the service is behind a table or counter on which the items of the trade are exchanged. The use of the term counter stems from the fact that the provider of the service often sat in a locked room that was only accessible via the counter (Middle High German: counter = bolt ) in order to prevent the securities, valuables or money kept by him from being accessed directly from outside protect.

Types of switches

A large number of types of switches exist in everyday life, some of which are mentioned here:

  • Bank counter are in banks and serve to cash deposits or cash payment of local currency or varieties , the purchase or sale of precious metals or of the deposit and withdrawal of securities ( counter transactions ). Through these transactions , the term "through the switch" was ( English over-the-counter ). In some branch banks , advisory services are also provided at counters . ATMs have largely replaced cash transactions at the counter.
  • Post office are localities in departments or service facilities in the post , where letters or packages will be offered for transport or stamps can be purchased for later use for shipping services. Financial services are also processed at many post offices.
  • Check-in counters are counters at which people, freight or luggage are checked in for further transport. These counters are mostly located at freight yards, ports, other transshipment points or state or customs borders.
  • Check-in counters are counters at airports where people and luggage are checked in for a flight. At these counters, airline tickets can usually be purchased and preparatory immigration formalities can be dealt with.
  • Ticket sales counters are often located in cinemas, theaters, stadiums or at the entrance to paid parks. They can be used to purchase tickets that entitle you to use a mostly cultural service.

In addition to the classic counters at which business is carried out personally between a provider and a customer, there are now so - called self - service counters at which there is a self-service machine or self-service terminal instead of the provider in person .

More recently, the term is increasingly Counter (English for counter ) within the meaning of switch used. This is particularly the case in areas with an international audience such as airports or trade fairs. The term then usually refers exclusively to open counters that only consist of a counter and do not encompass any closed space.
