The Abitur newspaper (also in short: Abitur newspaper , often also Abi (tur) book or Matura newspaper ) is the souvenir book of graduating classes of upper secondary school.

Manufacture

It is published once per Abitur class (in Germany and Austria) or per class (in Switzerland) and is prepared by the Abitur graduates on their own responsibility. Criticizing teachers is common. Even if every student is often involved, the core work is usually left to a small group of volunteers ( editorial team ). The publication date is usually after the actual Abitur (e.g. at the Abiball ). At many schools there is a consensus that the school management or a tutor reads the school newspaper before it is printed in order to identify and defuse offensive content.

Tasks and target group

The main addressees of the Abitur newspaper are the discharge students as well as their families and friends. This way they can remember their school days and the student body later. In order to achieve an economically necessary minimum print run, other groups of buyers often have to be tapped, such as B. Younger students , relatives and teachers.

Style and layout

While the content of the various high school newspapers is often similar, the style varies greatly. Both the writing ability and the graphic possibilities are determined by the abilities of individuals from the Abitur class. It is therefore difficult to determine a uniform style.

Usually the writing style is relaxed and funny. Characterizations of students and teachers often fluctuate between exaggeratedly flattering and shoddy offensive . Since every high school graduate can take part, including those whose strengths are not in writing, the quality of the text and the linguistic correctness can vary from page to page. The layout is mostly based on the respective Abimotto, under which the other events of the year are also.

Typical content of high school newspapers

Typical contents of high school newspapers include:

  • Foreword by the head of department / year spokesperson or the school management

    • characterized by a small group of friends

  • Looking back on the school days
  • Reports of excursions, language trips, sports weeks ...
  • Texts in the foreign languages that you learned during your school days
  • Description of projects, e.g. B. implemented student projects
  • Photos from school
  • Characterizations of the teachers
  • Texts written by teachers for the high school newspaper

  • Vintage surveys
  • Autograph pages

The first three main points usually take up a large part of the volume of the magazine. The content of the Abitur newspaper varies greatly depending on the region. That is, it can include all or just one of the points mentioned. The individual editorial offices are often inspired by high school newspapers from earlier years and nearby schools, but there is hardly any supra-regional exchange. In general, the only thing that applies is that the high school newspaper rarely has anything to do with what would correspond to the definition of a newspaper .

Costs and financing

Usually the printing and other costs (e.g. distribution / delivery or reimbursement of expenses) cannot be covered by the sale alone. So you are often dependent on sponsors and advertisers. The advertising prices usually do not correspond to the actual reach and are therefore also charitable. Local companies are mainly won as sponsors. Often, however, the high school graduates take the initiative in the form of cake bazaars or kiosks, flea markets, pre-party parties or collective blood donation.

multimedia

With increasing frequency, high school newspapers are also accompanied by websites , CD-ROMs or DVDs that offer additional content and formats. The content is primarily photos of what happened during the last years of school (events, festivals, high school parties, excursions), videos, certain songs that shaped the year, the high school newspaper in digital form, etc.
