Aboubakar Fofana (* 1967 in Bamako , Mali ) is a Malian textile artist and calligrapher .

Life

Aboubakar Fofana was born in the Malian capital Bamako. When he was ten years old, his family moved to Gennevilliers , a town on the north-west edge of Paris. He began to be interested in calligraphy. Fofana resorted to Western and Eastern traditions in order to become a master in his field. While searching for African calligraphy, through several chance events, he found a collection of writings from the continent. The diverse forms of written expression - some old, some modern - formed the basis for his first major exhibition, which countered the romantic notion that all African societies belonged to oral traditions.

In Paris he became interested in the traditional technique of dyeing textiles blue with the help of the indigo plant . As a young adult, Fofana traveled through Mali and the neighboring states of Senegal and Burkina Faso to gain knowledge about this dying tradition. He was also trained in textile dyeing by a Japanese master. In the early 2010s he went back to Bamako.

His contribution Fundi (German uprising ) was shown during documenta 14 in the Kassel documenta hall .
