Abraham Portaleone
Abraham ben David Portaleone (born March 18, 1542 in Mantua ; died July 29, 1612 there ) was an Italian-Jewish doctor and writer .
Life
Abraham Portaleone came from an important Jewish family from Mantua who already provided a number of doctors. He studied medicine at the University of Pavia and successfully completed his studies with a doctorate . In 1563 he received his license to practice medicine . Ten years later he was the personal physician in the service of the Dukes of Mantua. Pope Gregory XIV confirmed a decree by Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga and granted Portaleone a dispensation so that he could treat Christian patients.
In addition to two medical treatises in Latin, he wrote the Schilte ha-Gibborim (dt. The heroes shields ), an encyclopedic work in Hebrew , which ostensibly a description of Solomon's Temple is, however, is woven into all sorts of mundane considerations of medicine, alchemy, war Art & . a. offers.
Since 1605 Portaleone suffered from a one-sided paralysis, which he saw as a punishment from God, whereupon he wanted to turn to a more pious life. Portaleone died in Mantua on July 29, 1612 at the age of about 70.
