Abraxas was a German progressive metal and power metal band that was founded in Mössingen in Baden-Württemberg in 1985 and ceased its activities around 1998.

history

Abraxas was founded in 1985 by bassist Jan Müller and drummer Heiko Burst. After a few arrivals and departures of various musicians in 1988, the band recorded their first demo Vampire . After recording the demo, singer Joachim Hittinger found guitarist Oliver Mindner, who was 15 years old at the time. In April 1989, the band released the EP Shattered by a Terrible Prediction in an edition of 1,000 copies, which the musicians sold at their concerts and distributed on their own.

The composition changed until the end of 1989: There was a new, second guitarist in Stephan Rohner and, more recently, a keyboard player : Andreas Hittinger, Joachim's brother. In June 1990 Joachim Hittinger's voice problems were so severe that the doctors advised him to stop. Therefore the band engaged the singer Chris Klauke, who previously played in the Hamburg metal band Mania, to complete the fallow album. In December of the same year a new demo tape, Gates to Eden , was released. In 1991, again in December, the award-winning Demo Signs was added . In December 1992 Abraxas reached third place at Germany's largest young rock festival at Rockfabrik Ludwigsburg , previously it was first place at the Festival of Young Artists in Reutlingen in March . In September 1993 the group released their first studio album, The Liaison , which was first released in Japan. After three European record deals failed to materialize (twice due to bankruptcy), it was finally released in February 1998 by the newly founded label LMP - Limb Music Products & Publishing (Hamburg) under the new name Tomorrow's World and a completely new cover design as well as three bonus titles . Siggi Maier bridged the time when things were not going well for Abraxas with a job at Stormwitch . When the album was discussed in Metal magazines, nothing was known of a breakup, on the contrary, Rock Hard was curious to see how the band would develop. Nevertheless, there was no longer any sign of life. Maier and Burst reappeared years later on We are Legend. Klauke went to Berlin and joined Steam, then switched to Project X in 2007.

style

The online magazine Underground Empire called the style "Melody'n'Power" or "Melodic Power Metal". Frank Trojan chose the latter name in Rock Hard . He used Heavens Gate , Fair Warning and Helloween for comparison , but put this into perspective, since Abraxas only rudimentarily achieved their class. In the band biography of the Iron Pages lexicon series, the name Queensrÿche is only marginally mentioned . In the Metal Hammer Andreas Schöwe recommended the band to all listeners of Running Wild , Primal Fear and Gamma Ray .
