Plans de Frea

The Abri Plans de Frea is about 1930  m high, halfway of the old road between the Old Plan (Municipality Selva in Val Gardena ) and the Passo Gardena in South Tyrol ( Italy ).

A large boulder (called "Sas del Moro") that has fallen from the Sella Group has east-west oriented, overhanging rock roofs. Excavations carried out between 1978 and 80 revealed a Mesolithic settlement horizon . Garbage pits, remains of a partially sunk hut floor and about 250 machined microliths were found. Including the rock roof, there was a simple hut about 6.0 × 3.0 m in size, the front side of which was formed by rods leaning against the rock roof at an angle and fixed at the bottom by large stone slabs.

The hunting station dates from around 7000 BC. BC and is one of the oldest in the Alpine region . In the higher elevations there were two hearths and ceramics from the late Bronze Age .

The high medieval use as alpine pasture is also documented. In a traditional note of the Bishopric of Freising from the last quarter of the 11th century, a certain Grimold with envoys of the Freising Bishop Church negotiated Gardena ownership and use rights to pastures, including to "Planum", the alpine meadows on Plan de Frea.
