Abrosaurus is a genus of sauropod dinosaur and lived between 167 and 161 million years ago during the Middle Jurassic .

A completely preserved skull of the sauropod was found in 1984 in the Dashanpu formation in China. In addition to the holotype , a fragmentary skull was assigned to the genus.

The only species of the genus, Abrosaurus dongpoi , was described in 1986 in the dissertation of Ouyang Hui under the name Abrosaurus gigantorhinus . Since, according to the ICZN, a dissertation is not a permissible initial description, the name was initially regarded as a noun nudum . In 1989 Ouyang caught up with the publication in a newsletter of a Chinese regional museum , this time under the name Abrosaurus dongpoensis . Because this time the specific epithet was grammatically incorrect, the name was corrected to Abrosaurus dongpoi .
