Absinthium is an Italian metal band from Naples that was formed in 2003.

history

The band was founded in 2003 by bassist Dario Nuzzolo. The line-up was supplemented by the singer Alfredo Contino, the guitarists Gianluigi Di Fenza and Franco Buonocore and the drummer Umberto Dell'Anno. In March 2004 the first own songs were presented at the New Generation competition. In the months that followed, the group continued to write new songs. After Contino, Dell'Anno and Di Fenza left the cast, the remaining part started looking for new members. These were not found until the beginning of 2006 in the person of the singer Luca Gargiulo, the drummer Tommaso Ruberti and the guitarist Sergio De Salvin. A first demo was recorded in March and played on various internet radio stations such as Metal Express Radio . In July 2007 Gargiulo died of leukemia after months of illness . Alessandro Granato joined the group as the new singer, after which the songs written with Gargiulo were recorded with Granato as a tribute. In 2012 the debut album One for the Road was released via Punishment 18 Records . Ruberti and Buonocore left the group for personal reasons. The new line-up consists of the singer Fabio Dos Santos De Castilho, the guitarists Max Manthix and Marco Zuppa, the bassist Dario Nuzzolo and the drummer Jack Demaria.

style

Lior "Steinmetal" Stein from metal-temple.com wrote in his review of One for the Road that the band is based on the thrash and heavy metal of the early 1980s and 1990s, so that they have similarities to early Metallica , Megadeth , early Anthrax and Iron Maiden are audible. The songs are mostly quite long, whereby the band tries to be complex. Walter from metal.de assigned the album to Speed Metal , which was built on the basis of traditional, mainly British , Heavy Metal. He also noted the long playing time of the songs, as only eight songs were spread over 45 minutes. In the fast passages the band often reminds of groups like Anvil . He described the musicians on the instruments as talented because of their mastery of every variety from Megadeth to Judas Priest . Marcel Rapp from Powermetal.de classified the album in a similar way . Then there is speed metal in the style of the 1980s as well as traditional heavy metal, whereby one is "technically adept, extremely playful and varied". Lars Schuckar from musikreviews.de found the style specification “Speed Metal” mentioned on the band's information sheet to be inappropriate, at least if you compare the music with that of Exciter or Agent Steel . Although the songs are often quite fast, they could be better described as "Power Metal with an occasional tendency towards Thrash". The songs are thought-provoking rather than anthemic, and tempo changes are often used. In addition, influences from Megadeth, Annihilator and Metallica can be heard.
