Lists of aviation accidents

The crash of a Boeing 707-373C occurred on December 14, 1983 when a cargo plane of the airline TAMPA Colombia shortly after takeoff from the airport Medellin rushed to a factory complex. The three occupants of the machine and 22 people on the ground were killed. The accident had been preceded by an engine failure a few hours earlier, which is why the defective aircraft was to be flown to Miami for repair .

plane

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 707-373C of TAMPA Colombia with the model serial number 18707. It was the 349th machine of the Boeing 707 series from continuous production. The machine was first delivered to World Airways on June 26, 1963 , was then operated from February 28, 1971 by Britannia Airways and from June 11, 1973 by British Caledonian Airways . This leased the aircraft to Singapore Airlines in June 1976 . Two months later the machine returned to the British Caledonian fleet. On March 28, 1980 the machine was registered to its new owner, the leasing company International Air Leases (IAL), who leased it to TAMPA Colombia from April 1980.

the accident

The machine was originally intended for a cargo flight from Medellín Airport to Miami International Airport . When this flight took off on the morning of December 14, 1983, engine no. 4 (far right) suddenly suffered damage from foreign objects . The pilots immediately returned to the airport. Tampa Colombia mechanics inspected the machine and assessed the damage. Eventually it was decided to take the plane to Miami for repairs. The aircraft was unloaded and prepared for the empty flight to Miami.

In the afternoon, eight hours after the scheduled take-off, the aircraft started again with three active engines, the damaged engine was idling. Engine # 3 also failed during takeoff, the aircraft tilted, grazed power lines, and crashed into a clothing factory complex. All three crew members and 22 people on the ground died, 15 people were injured.
