Le Lys Abbey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The former royal Abbey of Notre-Dame du Lys (Abbaye royale Notre-Dame du Lys), now in ruins, was a 1244 by Louis IX. and Blanka of Castile donated nunnery of the Cistercian order . It was in the municipality of Dammarie-les-Lys four kilometers from Melun .

During the revolution it was allowed to be looted and used as a cattle enclosure, finally sold to a Swiss man in 1797 as a romantic ruin. In 1930 the ruin was classified as a monument historique .

founder

In the founding deed of June 1248, Louis IX declares that he founded and built the abbey from his own resources, without mentioning his mother Blanka of Castile. One month later, in July 1248, Louis conceded the use of the Bière forest to the abbey and mentions his mother as a co-founder. The documents of his successor are also not illuminating, since Philip IV and Philip V indicate Ludwig as the founder, while Philip VI. refers to Blanka of Castile.

Jean de Joinville makes an interesting distinction in his Vie de saint Louis : "Et otroia [Louis IX.] À sa mère à fonder l'abbaïe dou liz de lez Melun sur Seinne a celle de lez Pontoise que l'on nomme Malbisson et puis leur donna grans rentes et possessions ". After that, the abbey actually had two founders, Ludwig as the one who provided the funds and Blanka as the one who came up with the idea of founding it. More prose is the explanation that Blanka of Castile acted in her time as regent on behalf of the king without ever appearing in person.

founding year

The charter states June 1248, while there is evidence that the future location was selected as early as May 1244. The copial book of the abbey contains a statement about a sale of land by Guillaume de Sivry, vassal of Persoys de Vaux le Vicomte to the Abbey of Dammarie at that time. This abbey could not exist at that time, as it was not until June 1244 that Guérin Lysenet ceded the piece of land on which the monastery was to be built. As a result, 1244 is the year construction began, and 1248 the year in which the new women's convent started operations.
