history

Ruin of the abbey church

The nuns' abbey of Saint-Félix-de-Montceau (also incorrectly: Saint-Félix-de-Monceau ), which had existed in the diocese of Maguelone between Gigean and Frontignan on the Gardiole ridge on Lake Thau , was transferred from the Benedictine order to the Cistercian order in 1169 . At the end of the 13th century the Gothic abbey church (now preserved as a ruin) was built. In the 15th century, the convent became Benedictine again and in 1514 moved to the town of Gigean for security reasons, where the monastery was dissolved by the French Revolution in 1791 and there are no remains today. The field of ruins in the Gardiolemassiv, which has been a listed building since 1953, was renovated from 1970 on the initiative of Luc Routier by a specially founded association ( Association de sauvegarde de l'Abbaye Saint-Félix de Montceau ), which is also planning a museum. A monastery garden was set up as a special feature .
