Abbot tower

The Abtsturm , also known as the Lambergturm , is a former fortification building on the Mönchsberg in the city of Salzburg and dates from the time the first city fortifications were built around 1280. The building has served as a residential building since the 17th century. It has recently been inhabited by the painter Agnes Muthspiel and the ski pioneer Stefan Kruckenhauser, among others .

history

The exact time when the abbot tower was built is not known, but it is clear that the monastery of St. Peter ruled the tower as a property dispute between the monastery and the archbishop of 1372 shows. In 1412 the neighboring house is referred to as "initially located in the abbot thurn". The abbot tower and the higher “ red tower ” served as a defensive structure in the gap between the fortress and Mönchsberg. They were connected to one another with a picket fence and together formed a closed bulwark.

In the land register of St. Peter from 1744, the property is described as consisting of three parts (a small house belonging to no. 9 without its own number, "Gartenstöckl"), Meierhaus and garden "between the ways" (today no. 6) and a so-called apple punt). This also corresponds to the triangular-like area surrounded by a garden wall today. The buildings partly formed a common property, partly they were sold and managed separately. The tower was given to Hans Speck, cook from St. Peter, and his family in 1540 as a personal treasure. In 1586 the canon Johann Jakob von Lamberg bought it , hence the name Lambergturm . Lamberg became bishop of Gurk in 1603 . In the 17th century, the original shape of the abbot tower was changed significantly by a conversion for residential purposes. In 1620 another Christoph Lamberg was named as the owner. From this the property came to the Count's Lodronic Primogeniture , who sold the tower to Christian Sattler in 1648. As a result, there is a long line of diverse owners, in 1910 Josef and Luise Huttary became the owners through purchase.

The abbot tower today

The Abtsturm is located on Dr.-Herbert-Klein-Weg (named after the long-time director of the Salzburg State Archives), but the house numbering is based on the continuous counting of the buildings on the Mönchsberg, and not on the street name.

Famous are two personalities who lived here in the 20th century, on the one hand the naive painter Agnes Muthspiel , and then also Stefan Kruckenhauser , the inventor of the elegant skiing style of wedeln . The name Kruckenhauservilla goes back to the latter . A number of important artists were guests at Agnes Muthspiel, such as the sculptor Toni Schneider-Manzell , the composers Gottfried von Eine and Carl Orff , the poets Werner Bergengruen , Gerhard Amanshauser and Bert Brecht or the painters Eduard Bäumer and Paul Flora .
