Abu Dis

Abu Dis ( Arabic أبو ديس Abū Dīs ; Alternative spelling Abu Deis ) is a city east of Jerusalem , which is under the administration of the Palestinian Authority . The city currently has 11,672 inhabitants. Its ancient name was Beit Phaig. The city lies between al-Aizariyya in the north and Zawahira ash-sharqiyya in the south. The Israeli settlement of Maʿale Adummim borders Abu Dis in the east.

Most of the Palestinian Authority authorities and offices related to Jerusalem are located in Abu Dis, which has grown in importance over the past few years. The city was therefore also under discussion as the potential capital of a future Palestinian state. The al-Quds University with 4,000 students is also located here . Every day about as many people commute to the city as there are living there.

Abu Dis was and is repeatedly mentioned as a possible capital of a Palestinian state should the eastern part of Jerusalem remain under Israeli administration. In October 2007, a possible division of Jerusalem was propagated media, both Israeli Vice Premier Haim Ramon , as well as by the Palestinians - President Mahmoud Abbas .
