The al-Quds University ( Arabic جامعة القدس, DMG Ǧāmiʿat al-Quds ) is a Palestinian university with locations in and around Jerusalem . It is the only Arab university in Jerusalem.

overview

It was founded in 1984 as a loose association of four dislocated universities and vocational schools. From 1995 to 2014 the president was the politician and philosophy professor Sari Nusseibeh . He turned the colleges at four locations founded between 1978 and 1982 in East Jerusalem (art, Islamic archeology), Abu Dis (technology), al-Bireh (nursing school) and Beit Hanina (theology) into a single university with the faculties of art, dentistry, Engineering, Islamic theology, medicine, pharmacy, law, and healthcare.

politics

Since Nusseibeh advocates a peaceful solution to the Middle East conflict , he did not tolerate any violent actions by his students or radical Islamic influence on campus life. The university operates the educational television channel al-Quds Educational TV in al-Bireh , which in 1997 dared to criticize the mismanagement of the Palestinian Authority under Yasser Arafat for the first time . In the summer there are also courses for guests teaching Arabic or Palestinian history.

While other Palestinian universities could emerge in the 1970s, one was not wanted in Jerusalem. Although most of the buildings are now outside the city limits, the main office has been left in East Jerusalem. There have been several attempts to close the university by legal means. One point of attack is that the University in Jerusalem operates without an Israeli license and that it is a banned Palestinian Authority institution . Despite or because of the president's peace initiatives, the university has repeatedly been the target of measures by the Israeli police and army , according to Nusseibeh . On March 29, 2002, the facilities in al-Bireh were occupied by the Israeli army and badly damaged. The health school was ravaged and used as a temporary prison. Al-Quds TV, which was housed in the same building, was thrown out of the window and destroyed.

On July 10, 2002, the administration building in East Jerusalem with the office of Sari Nusseibeh was closed by order of the security minister Uzi Landau and computers and files were confiscated. This was justified with "prohibited activities for the PLO" because Nusseibeh was their representative for Jerusalem at that time. On that very day he was in Athens to sign a peace initiative with Ami Ajalon . After international protests, Landau had to unblock the office ten days later. The data was evaluated by the domestic secret service and only returned later. Because of the restrictive controls at the border with Jerusalem, some students are no longer able to reach their faculties within the city limits. Some courses therefore had to be moved from Beit Hanina to Abu Dis.

The wall at the soccer field (March 2006)

In 2003 Israel wanted to build its "protective wall" right through the university campus of Abu Dis. This was justified with the defined border between Jerusalem and Abu Dis and a planned bypass road there. As a result, the campus would have lost a third of its area. 34 days of peaceful protests, mainly because of the planned division of the sports field, led to the intervention of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and prompted Israel to build the wall further west, but right next to the university. Now the sports field is part of the campus, albeit behind the 8 meter high concrete wall. However, if the road is still to be built, the wall will have to be moved.

Due to the poor economic situation of the Palestinians, there are currently funding problems. The university is financed by tuition fees and donations. Many of them are unable to pay higher contributions, which is why there are repeated problems with paying employees' salaries.

The medical school's reputation is one of the best in the entire Arab world. For a number of years, however, the Israeli Ministry of Health has refused al-Quds University graduates from taking the Israeli entrance exam, which enables foreign doctors to work in Israel. This on the grounds that the university is not located abroad - not because of the location in Abu Dis, but because of the buildings in East Jerusalem. In East Jerusalem, however, there is a great need for Palestinian doctors because of the lack of doctors there.

On the night of February 28-29, 2012, Israeli communications ministry officials raided the al-Quds television station in al-Bireh, with the help of a raid by Israeli soldiers, and confiscated transmitters and computers. The reasons given were the lack of a license and the use of unauthorized frequencies.

A partnership with the American Brandeis University ended in November 2013 after a scandal when members of the Islamic Jihad held a demonstration among the student body on campus with hats, dummy weapons and the traditional Nazi salute and the reaction of the university administration was deemed inappropriate.

As a result, Sari Nusseibeh resigned as president in March 2014, the official reason given was reaching retirement age of 65 years. The new president is Imad Abu Kishek , a lawyer who received his doctorate from Northeastern University in 2011 .
