The Abua is a language spoken on the Atlantic Ocean in Nigeria . It belongs to the language family of the Niger-Congo languages .

Geographical distribution

The language is spoken by 30,000 residents (as of 2002) locally in the Degema and Ahoada areas in the Nigerian state of Rivers State . There is also a very small, but linguistically lively group of immigrants in the United States of America who are increasingly adopting the English language.

Dialects

The Abua distinguish between four dialects of their language; Ogbo, Emughan, Otabha and Okpeden.

Literature in Abua

The writings published in Abua are mostly rare and mostly translations of various already existing works and materials, especially from the field of religion.
The first written materials date from 1971 , the Aselemi adibel adinya itugha onu Abuan and the Opuru adiri ogbia by Ian Gardner and Idumesaro, respectively, as well as the New Testament on Abua 1978 . 1980 published Ian Gardner a dictionary Abua English.
