Acanthocereus baxaniensis is a species of plant in the genus Acanthocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet baxaniensis refers to a Mexican place called "Baxan" (Baján?).

description

Acanthocereus baxaniensis grows shrubby with short, upright, gray-green shoots that appear at the base, branching out at their tips when old, and reaches heights of 40 to 60 centimeters. There are 5 to 7 thin ribs that are up to 1.5 centimeters high. The gray areoles are up to 3.5 centimeters apart. The single, upright, awlish central spine is whitish and has a darker tip. There are 6 to 8 whitish radial spines with yellowish tips and 5 to 15 millimeters long.

The flowers are up to 11 centimeters long. The egg-shaped to ellipsoidal fruits are reddish purple in color and have large areoles with white wool and thorns. They are 5 inches long and 4 inches wide.

Distribution and systematics

Acanthocereus baxaniensis is common in Cuba .

The first description as Cereus baxaniensis was published in 1837 by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer . John Borg placed them in the genus Acanthocereus in 1937 .
