Acantholimon androsaceum is a species of the genus Acantholimon inthe lead root family (Plumbaginaceae).

features

Acantholimon androsaceum is a cushion dwarf shrub that reaches heights of 4 to 10 centimeters. The plant forms ball cushions. The leaves are very dense and linear-sub-like and encompass half the stem at the base. They are finely serrated and their tip is piercing. The spring leaves are (2.5) 5 to 10 millimeters long and glabrous, the summer leaves are (3.5) 7 to 10.5 millimeters long, short and bald or densely hairy.

The flower stalk is hairy, 2 to 3 (10) millimeters long and has an ear with one to three spikelets. At its base there is a single-pointed, membranous bract . The calyx is 8 to 10 millimeters long, membranous, has five purple nerves and is finely fluffy at the base. The petals are reddish.

The flowering period extends from June to July.

Occurrence

Acantholimon androsaceum is on Crete in the prefectures of Chania, Rethymnon and Iraklion endemic . The species only grows in the Ida Mountains and in the Lefka Ori in hedgehog cushion heaths at altitudes of 1500 to 2400 meters.
