The Acheron River is located in the Marlborough region on the South Island of New Zealand .
It rises in the area of Shingle Peak . The river flows southwest and then southeast and is about 60 km long. In its middle course it follows the course of the Rachel Range . The only place near the course is Molesworth on the Awatere River, which does not flow into the Acheron .
Right tributaries are the Saxton River , Alma River, and Yarra River ; the Guide River is a left tributary.
The Acheron flows into the Clarence River at the southern end of the Kaikoura Ranges in the area of the border between the Marlborough and Canterbury regions northeast of Hanmer Springs .
