The Acheron River is located in the Canterbury region on the South Island of New Zealand . It flows south from Lake Lyndon into the Rakaia River .

Smaller coal deposits were found on the river . In the 1870s there was a proposal to extend the Whitecliffs branch line through Rakaia Gorge to the Acheron River in order to gain access to the coal deposits. In 1880 a royal commission approved the expansion, but it was never realized.
