The Achfurt (also: Furt an der Ach or Furt for short ) crosses the Dornbirner Ach (at around 413  m above sea level ) and connects the Rohrbach district via the Rohrbach road with the Höchsterstraße in the Schoren district . On the north side of the Achfurt, the Ache drops sharply and forms a slope of over five meters in height. The Achfurt crosses the Dornbirner Ache at water kilometers 12.225.

In the same place, it is also a parcel, which is referred to as a ford for short .

Demarcation

A ford is basically understood to be a shallow part of a river, where the water can be crossed more easily on foot or with vehicles. The Achfurt (walking and driving surface) in Dornbirn, in its current structural design, is raised from the streambed itself by massive hollow box profiles made of concrete and therefore not a ford in the literal sense of the word. It is a river crossing that can be temporarily flooded.

The Achfurt in Dornbirn was a ford in the conventional sense until the Second World War . Landfills were repeatedly swept away during floods. The ford infrastructure has been repeatedly damaged up to the present day. B. in the course of the Alpine floods in 2005 . Even after the expansion of the existing profiles (up until then, some concrete pipes had been installed to allow the flow through, but these had only a low absorption capacity ), the Achfurt continues to be flooded several times a year, but the bedload passage has been significantly improved as well as the risk of blockage and Road closures are only necessary during the course of the year for a few exceptional flood events.

traffic

The carriageway was raised again in the mid-2000s and the river passage was expanded. Automatic barrier control via continuous, hydrological monitoring of the water level (non-contact measurement by means of radar sensor RL-15) prevents vehicles from using the ford in the event of flooding by closing barriers on both sides of the approach to the ford.

The Achfurt can be used by vehicles up to 40 tons. Around 7,000 vehicles cross this bottleneck every day. For pedestrians and cyclists there is a so-called "Achsteg" a few meters above the Achfurt.

Recreation area

The area around the Achfurt is the starting point for numerous paths for jogging , walking or walks . In summer, the area directly below the Achfurt is a popular bathing place for the resident population (there is water quality class II here).

The Union Tennis Club, the Zizeler tournament area of an equestrian club and the public fitness course of the city of Dornbirn are also located near the Achfurt.

Obstacle to migration

The ford forms a relevant migration barrier for fish. Only a few fish species that are strong enough to swim, but not all naturally occurring fish species, are able to cross the threshold of the Achfurt.

Trivia

When the parish vicariate in the Dornbirn district of Rohrbach was created in 1964, the proximity to the ford led to the election of St. Christophorus as church patron (raised to parish on January 1st, 1980). The Rohrbach district's public cemetery is also located near the Achfurt.
