Schoren is the 6th district of the city of Dornbirn ( Vorarlberg , Austria ). Together with the Rohrbach district , Schoren was only declared a separate district in 1994. Before that, it belonged entirely to the Hatlerdorf district . Today the district has a total population of 5,638 inhabitants (as of 2012).

location

The district shares the area south of the Dornbirner Ach with the parent district Hatlerdorf . The boundaries between the two districts run roughly at the level of the Egeten, Bäumlegasse and Erlgrund streets through what is sometimes a very densely built-up residential area.

Origin of name

The origin of the place name Schoren is most likely derived from the term “Schore”, which was used to designate a scraper to remove mud in the river bed of the Dornbirn Ach after floods. The location of the district on the left bank of the Dornbirner Ach and therefore the fact that this area was affected by flooding before the construction of the Achdamm in the 1830s allows the conclusion that the name of the sludge removal device was chosen as the place name.

The district name Schoren is often referred to as Der Schoren with a specific male article , local information about the district is in Schoren .

Infrastructure

Public facilities

There are relatively many public institutions in Schoren. The former urban plots along the Ach were used as space for new facilities, such as the Höchststraße nursing home (formerly old people's home), the new cattle market, the Bundesrealgymnasium and Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium Dornbirn-Schoren , the Vorarlberg state studio of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation , the former artificial ice rink, the Birkenwiese retirement home, the Birkenwiese stadium , the state sports school and the HTL Dornbirn . The district is also home to the exhibition grounds with the exhibition stadium . To the west of the Rhine Valley Motorway is the Dornbirn Motorway Police post with responsibility for the entire Rhine Valley.

economy

The economic center of the district is the area around the exhibition grounds and the Dornbirn Süd motorway exit. The largest shopping center in the country, the Messepark, is located here . In addition to the exhibition park, branches of the Kika , Obi , Metro brands as well as the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel (in the Panoramahaus Dornbirn ) and numerous other companies are located here.

traffic

Lustenauerstraße (L 204) and the Rheintalautobahn (A 14) with junction 18 Dornbirn Süd run through the district . In the Höchsterstraße (L 42 Werbenstraße ) is the ÖBB stop in Dornbirn-Schoren, which was expanded into a modern train stop in 2007 on the occasion of the 2007 World Gymnaestrada . S1 trains stop there .

Sports

There are numerous sports facilities in Schoren. The Birkenwiese stadium (football and athletics), the state sports school, two tennis facilities, several riding stables, the fitness course and the southern parts of the marked Dornbirn running routes are located along Höchsterstrasse. There are several training and competition facilities for various sports in the exhibition grounds, which are also used by the sports high school. The exhibition stadium is a multi-purpose hall that is primarily used as an ice rink, but is also suitable for other sports such as handball or indoor football.

church

The parish church of St. Brother Klaus , which is consecrated to Niklaus von Flüe , has an elliptical floor plan with high window walls, an attached baptistery, a free-standing tower and concrete glass windows by Martin Häusle . Schoren was separated from the parish of Hatlerdorf in 1965 by the parish vicariate of Brother Klaus as its own pastoral care .
