Achim Dieter Kessler (born August 2, 1964 in St. Georgen in the Black Forest ) is a Hessian politician ( Die Linke ). He was elected to the Bundestag as a candidate in second place on the Hessian list for the 2017 federal election.

Life

After the civil service in the Workers' Welfare Villingen-Schwenningen in 1986 was followed by a study of the more recent German literature and media studies , as well as the economic and social history in Marburg . During his studies, Kessler was a member of the Marxist Student Union Spartakus and was elected to their national executive committee. In 1993 he became a member of the board of the Lesbian and Gay Association in Germany Hesse and from 1993–1994 chairman of the AStA at the University of Marburg . In 1998 Kessler became a board member of AIDS-Hilfe Marburg eV

In 2004 he completed a doctorate on Ernst Bloch at the Free University of Berlin . Since 2005 he was electoral district employee of the Bundestag member Wolfgang Gehrcke and since then state press spokesman for the PDS Hessen, later Die Linke. Hessen, where he also became deputy state chairman from 2010 to 2014. From 2006 to 2011 Kessler was an honorary councilor for the city of Frankfurt am Main.

After activities in academic self-administration and in the LGBT movement, Achim Kessler joined the PDS in 2001 and in 2007 accompanied the process of unifying the WASG and PDS to form Die Linke. In 2008 he ran in the constituency Main-Taunus I , where he achieved 2.5% of the votes cast. For the state elections in 2009 he ran again as a direct candidate in constituency 32. As a candidate, he mainly dealt with socio-political issues and the pension system.

In the 19th German Bundestag , Kessler is chairman of the health committee . He is also an alternate member of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development and the Global Health subcommittee.
