With Neunkirchen, he immediately won the championship in the southwest under coach Alfred Preißler in 1962 and made it to the final round of the German championship. As defending champion it was enough in the last year of the old first-class Oberliga era 1962/63 to runner-up and the renewed individual in the finals. For Neunkirchen he completed another 43 league games from 1961 to 1963 and scored four goals for the team from the Ellenfeldstadion . FC Saarbrücken from the southwest were considered for the upper house of German football. Melcher and his teammates from Neunkirchen thus started in the Southwest Regional Football League . After 38 game days, in which Melcher always played and scored a goal, the Borussia celebrated the championship under coach Horst Buhtz , so they were qualified for the first round of promotion to the Bundesliga. The promotion round was successfully designed after a weak start, with victories against FC Bayern Munich , FC St. Pauli and Tasmania Berlin , Melcher played four of the six games. Melcher and teammates started in the Bundesliga with three defeats. The rest of the season turned out to be more successful, so that the Bundesliga season 1964/65 ended for Neunkirchen in 10th place. In the second Bundesliga season 1965/66 , the Neunkirchen could not build on the performance of the previous year. In the end, Borussia was penultimate and relegated. Melcher came in his first Bundesliga season on 27 and in his second season on 25 league appearances. In his first year in the Bundesliga he also scored a goal for Neunkirchen. After the 1966/67 season, he had only completed three competitive games in the Regionalliga Südwest for Borussia, he ended his higher-class career.
